Where Have All the Patrons Gone

I'm just curious what happened to the great tradition of patrons supporting artists. It seems like somewhere along the line people stopped caring about art and started to care more about celebrity. It saddens me deeply. I think that's why there's a lot of mediocrity going on. People can be shitty at what they do but if they're cute and have the right connections they can, 'make it'.
